What Does a Migraine Feel Like? New AR Technology Will Show You

If you could experience what it’s like to have a migraine, would you?

New augmented reality (AR) technology, created by Excedrin, is allowing non-sufferers attempt a migraine simulator. The technology has the uncanny ability to replicate specific migraine symptoms, such as sensitivity to light and noise, disorientation, and aura.

Below is video showing the migraine simulator in action. Some of the people who tested it out even had to take off the headset because the sensations that came with aura or light sensitivity was too much to bear.

Excedrin says it developed the migraine simulator using AR technology to change the stigma which surrounds migraine sufferers. To put it differently, the company wants to show non-sufferers that migraines are more than just bad headaches.

Migraines affect 36 million people across the nation, according to the Migraine Research Foundation. Not all sufferers encourage the technology, however.

After undergoing the AR migraine, one sufferer wrote,”. . .while augmented reality did mimic the physical and emotional pain of a migraine, it doesn’t really give the true pain and suffering of an actual migraine.”
