STUDY: How Laser Therapy Can Treat Chronic Craniofacial Pain

Laser therapy has become an effective way to help accelerate healing and reduce pain associated with many types of conditions and diseases. And, for treating craniofacial pain there is no exception. Side effects are low, and the therapy is simple to deploy.

The problem is, despite vast research, laser therapy for craniofacial pain isn’t widespread yet. In an effort to increase awareness on this topic, a team of researchers recently studied the immediate effect of reduced pain symptoms in craniofacial patients after laser therapy treatment. What they discovered was nothing short of encouraging.

What is Craniofacial Pain?

Craniofacial pain is a term used to describe any chronic facial, neck or head pain; the most common of which is Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ or TMJD).

Craniofacial pain may include:

  • frequent migraine headaches
  • earaches
  • facial-muscle stiffness and fatigue
  • neck and upper back tension
  • “lock jaw”
  • dizziness
  • ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

The Study

For the study, 65 patients — ranging in age from 13-65 — were treated with a dual wavelength NIR laser source. In the laser, two emissions, at 808 nm and 905 nm, were synchronized with continuous chopped and pulsed delivery. TM joints, masseters, trapezius muscles, and the cervical area were treated. Patients were then asked to state their pain levels before and after the treatment.

The Results

A comparison of pre and post pain reports showed a 49.9% decrease in pain after the first treatment.

There was a 25.2% decrease after the second treatment, followed by a 9% decrease after the third treatment.

The Conclusion

Laser treatment, lasting roughly 8 minutes per session, leads to a definitive decrease in craniofacial pain in patients. The researchers conclude that this form of laser therapy for craniofacial pain should be adapted in mainstream clinical settings.
