Study Finds Doctors Over-Prescribe Painkillers

A new survey released this month shows one reason why abuse of prescriptions painkillers is at an all-time-high. The results of the survey by the National Safety Council show that 99% of primary care doctors routine prescribe opioid painkillers for longer than the three-day period recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The survey also found that doctors routinely prescribe painkillers for unsuitable conditions.

These findings come on the heels of new prescription guidelines released by the CDC which is meant to stop the proliferation of opioid prescriptions, which some experts say  has contributed to a sharp spike in addiction — both to pain pills and the street opioid heroin.

Among the recommendations: That opioids generally be reserved for cancer, palliative and end-of-life care, and when they are prescribed for short-term pain, be limited to three days.

Unfortunately, however,  about 1 in 5 doctors ordinarily prescribe pills for 30 days. A large portion of the doctors said they prescribe the drugs for purposes that medical organizations like the American Academy of Neurology have found to be inappropriate — such as headache, fibromyalgia or lower back pain.

One theory for the reliance on opioid medications is that, in the past, doctors were faulted for failing to adequately treat their patients’ pain, and that some have over-corrected. Another reason: Insurance companies often won’t pay for non-pharmaceutical interventions such as acupuncture or massage therapy
