Sleep apnea is a very serious and potentially deadly condition. Fortunately, it is treatable. However, it’s hard to treat sleep apnea if we don’t know that a person has it. For too many people in the U.S. go undiagnosed each year.
Now, a new study suggests the medical community should get serious about sleep apnea — especially among seniors. Researchers suggest the risk of sleep apnea among seniors is so high that all seniors should be tested. However, the study shows that over 90% of seniors aren’t getting tested.
A Large Senior Study
Researchers based their findings on data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), which includes survey results from over 1000 seniors. The survey asked if the seniors had been tested for sleep apnea, and, if so, what was the result.
According to the questionnaire, 56% of the respondents were at high risk for sleep apnea. However, only 8% of the respondents had actually been tested for sleep apnea. When seniors were tested, however, they were very likely to be diagnosed with sleep apnea (94%).
This suggests that the medical community is not doing enough to screen seniors for sleep apnea. There are many risks that seniors face from sleep apnea, including poor cardiovascular health, dementia, and potential links to cancer.
Should You Be Tested for Sleep Apnea?
If you are an older American, you should consider getting tested for sleep apnea. Or at least get a preliminary screening.
While there are some invasive procedures and face mask devices that may correct sleep apnea, they are not the #1 cures.
