Drinks that come in a can may be convenient, but the effects they have on your health can be detrimental. A new study out of Israel found that 6 to 18-year-olds who downed large amounts of caffeinated soft drinks (about 51 ounces, or more than 6 cups) reported chronic kids headaches and even migraines.
The good news? Once the kids quit, so did their head pain.
Doctors believe the headaches were caused by the caffeine. Because it is a stimulant, caffeine affects the expansion and contraction of blood vessels in the brain — all of which can cause headaches.
Sodas aren’t the only culprit. Other popular caffeinated soft drinks include:
- Red Bull
- Mountain Dew
- Mello Yello
- Mr. Pibb
- Dr Pepper
- vitamin waters
One catch: Caffeine withdrawal can also cause headaches. Wean your kids gradually by reducing sodas and other caffeine-laced drinks by one-quarter each week. If kids headaches persist, consult a medical professional.
