New Instagram “Migraine Pose” Not Sitting Well With True Sufferers

Pasadena Pain ManagementWhen a migraine strikes, most sufferers would say they look anything but flattering. But flattering is just what pretty people on Instagram are going for in a new trend called the “migraine pose.”

A recent Elle magazine article examined the trend, explaining that the pose is achieved by posing with one or two hands pulling the face upward toward the temples. The pose is to give the face a more tightened appearance, but it also lifts the eyebrows, and makes cheekbones more prominent.

“It’s a temporary facelift for Instagram,” the article says.

The pose was named by makeup artist Nam Vo, who told Elle she always makes her models pose this way.

“I love it because the beauty of your hands frame the face and give it more structure,” Vo told Elle. “It’s also a great time to show off your manicure.”

So what do people who suffer from migraines really think of the pose?

Utter nonsense.

In reaction to Elle’s coverage of the “migraine pose,” suffers are speaking out, saying that the pose trivializes migraines by representing the condition as a fashion statement.

Some have also shared what a real “migraine pose” looks like when you actually have migraine — which is anything but pretty.

The American Migraine Foundation is even weighing in. It sent a formal letter to the editor-in-chief of Elle magazine, inviting the publication to use its reach and influence to demonstrate compassion and understanding for the millions of women around the world living with migraine, and educate its readers about the reality of the condition.

“We are hoping to use this as an opportunity to change the conversation about migraine and put an end to the stigma surrounding this disabling disease,” said David Dodick, chairman of the AMF.

As a pain management provider, I couldn’t agree more.
