Migraine Vaccine Could Be Out In As Soon As A Year

When taking a shower or brushing your hair is painful — you know you’re in the throes of a migraine episode.

Until just a few decades ago, all people had to take the pain away was an aspirin. Since the 1980’s however, researchers have developed strong drugs to halt migraine pain once it begins. BUT, many of those drugs come with serious side effects. Some people cannot take them if they are at risk for heart disease or other conditions. Also, if the drugs are not taken within the first hour of migraine headache pain, they don’t help much.

Antibodies Show Promise in Fight Against Migraines

Now, with all eyes on new preventive treatments for migraines — the medical field is showing real excitement about CGRP monoclonal antibodies, or the so-called new “migraine vaccine.”

This new class of drugs are believed to stop migraines at their root. Scientists say the drugs block the activity of a molecule called calcitonin gene-related peptide, or CGRP, which spikes during migraine attacks. CGRP is “the best validated target for migraine, ever,” says David Dodick, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix.

4 Pharma Companies Pave the Way

Right now, four pharmaceutical companies are rushing to complete advanced clinical trials of antibodies that either neutralize CGRP by binding to it, or block its receptor. So far, data suggests the drugs work faster, for longer, and better than anything currently available.

Three of those four companies have completed their final phase 3 trials and in a few months will submit their data to the FDA. The FDA has a year to decide whether to approve them — so, there is speculation that this new “migraine vaccine” may be out in as soon as a year.
