As a trained TMJ and pain management specialist, I understand the deep correlation between migraines, jaw pain, head and other types of facial pain. My training has focused on how these types of pain conditions are sometimes intertwined.
But now, a new study is shedding even more light on this topic.
Researchers from the University of Sao Paulo have found that people who suffer from frequent migraine attacks are 3-times more likely to experience severe temporomandibular disorder (TMD) — which is pain and compromised movement of the jaw joint and its surrounding muscles.
The findings of the study revealed that the signs and symptoms of TMD were observed in:
- 54% of the control participants without migraine
- 80% of participants with episodic migraine (less than 15 migraines a month)
- 100% of those with chronic migraine (more than 15 migraines a month)
The research showed that patients with chronic migraine are at extreme risk for severe symptoms of TMD than patients with episodic migraine.
TMD is stress-related as much as it has to do with muscle overload, where the patients have TMJ symptoms such as joint pain, reduced jaw movement, clicking or popping in the jaw.
It’s also interesting to note, that while migraine patients are more likely to have signs and symptoms of TMD, the reverse is not true. There are cases of patients with severe TMD who don’t have migraines.
If you are experiencing any type of TMD pain, it’s imperative that you seek a immediate help from a trained specialist.
The results of this study appear in the journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.
