If you don’t get migraine attacks, chances are you know someone who does (more than 10 percent of the U.S. population experiences them) and have struggled to find the right words to provide comfort.
Giving support, however, to someone who is in a great deal of pain from a condition you may not understand is challenging. You may mean well, but the words you say could potentially come out wrong making you sound uncaring, or simply ignorant.
To help you understand the condition and what your friend or loved one is going through, here is the truth surrounding some popular migraine myths:
Myth #1 – Find a distraction, something to take your mind off the pain.
Simple distractions may be helpful for minor bumps and bruises, but they don’t work for migraine sufferers. In fact, physical activity may make the symptoms worse! During an attack most people prefer to rest in a dark room, especially because of the associated symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity. Many people are also wiped out after the whole ordeal, and might not feel back to normal for a few hours or even days.
Myth #2 – Drinking water will get rid of a migraine.
While studies show dehydration may trigger a migraine, drinking water is not going to get rid of one. In fact, chances are the migraine sufferer is too nauseated to drink.
Myth #3 – If you get migraines, you apparently can’t handle stress.
Stress and anxiety may trigger an attack, but that doesn’t mean a migraineur is any better or worse at handling stress compared to someone without a diagnosis. And it’s a trigger for attacks, not the reason for the condition itself.
No matter the cause of your migraine, you shouldn’t have to live in pain.
