Think You Have a TMJ Disorder? Here’s How to Tell

Do you have pain in your jaw? Do you have trouble controlling the movement of your mouth?

If your answer is “yes” to both of these questions, then you may have a TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder.

What is the TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal bone at the side of your head.  Under normal circumstances, joints are flexible, allowing the jaw to move up and down and side to side quite smoothly. They also allow you to yawn, chew, and talk.

However, the combination of hinge and sliding motions makes this joint very complicated and, sometimes, TMJ disorders related to it are difficult to diagnose.  According to the National Institute of Dental And Craniofacial Research, it’s estimated that over 10 million Americans are affected with some form of TMJ disorder.  It appears to be more common in women than in men.

Symptoms Associated With a TMJ Disorder

The most common symptoms associated with TMJ disorders are:

  • Pain in the chewing muscles
  • Pain in jaw joint
  • Radiating pain in the face, jaw or neck
  • Stiffness in the jaw muscle, and limited movement or locking of the jaw.

Additionally, sometimes TMJ can cause a change in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.  A painful clicking or popping in the jaw joint may be present when opening or closing the mouth.

Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR) for TMJ Pain

The good news is that TMJ disorders are most likely temporary and can be treated effectively at Pasadena Pain Management. We use an exclusive therapy called Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR). By using computer-guided technology, we compile data on a TMJ/TMD patient’s timed and force bites inside the mouth. The data collected can nearly permanently correct TMJ problems. In fact, in most patients, many of the TMJ pain and Symptoms go away within the first week after treatment has begun – without a mouthguard!

If you suspect you have a TMJ disorder, it’s important to consult with us here at Pasadena Pain Management. We can help identify the source of the problem — and provide you with lasting pain relief.
