As Southern California’s thriving Muslim community observes the holy month of Ramadan — which ends the evening of Thursday, June 14 — I thought it would be important to address the topic of headaches and migraines during this period.
Women Have Higher Migraine Risk During Ramadan
Globally, more than 90 million Muslims suffer from migraines. And, during Ramadan fasting, studies have shown that the frequency of migraine attacks triples — especially among women.
Experts say there are many triggers for a headache during Ramadan, including:
- Dehydration due to reduced water intake
- Hot weather
- Caffeine withdrawal
- Change in daily routine or sleep
Preventing Migraine Triggers During Ramadan
Health experts recommend that Ramadan observers consume a lot of water during the evening to make up for the lack of consumption during the day. Hot weather and bright sunlight should also be avoided. In other words, stay indoors where it is air conditioned! Also, caffeine consumption should be kept at a minimum at night to avoid withdrawal symptoms during the day.
Of course, a little cat nap during the day also helps.
Remember, not all headaches are a migraine and emergency assistance should be sought if a headache is more severe than usual, is associated with nausea and vomiting, blurring of vision, slurring of speech, weakness or numbness of one side of the body, drowsiness or unconsciousness.
