Migraine conditions run the gamut, from mild to severe. They were previously thought to be the result of a abnormal dilation of blood vessels in the brain, but now we know the causes can be much more complex — ranging from heredity to dental force imbalances.
Women are much more likely than men to have migraines, as are people with a family history of migraines. But not all migraines are alike and not everyone has the same migraine symptoms.
How Long Will a Migraine Last? It Depends!
According to the National Headache Foundation says most migraines last 4 to 72 hours. Some people have migraines for a shorter time and some people have them for longer — it’s very individual.
Migraine duration also depends on the type of migraine you have:
- An optical migraine causes visual disturbances such as zigzags or blind spots or blurred vision often in one eye, but no headache pain; it typically lasts an hour or two.
- Classic migraines, which start with a warning sign or aura and can be quite painful, can last a day or two.
- Common migraines, those that do not have auras first, can last three or four days. With this type of migraine, the pain in your head may be only on one side.
When migraine duration is longer than three or four days, it’s called status migrainous and requires immediate medical attention because it increases your risk of stroke.
Shortening Migraine Length
Some people have warnings that a migraine is coming on, including:
- Changes in vision, such as blind spots or blurring
- Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
- Extreme thirst
- Mood swings
- Fatigue or excess energy
Migraine Treatment to the Rescue
The cause of your migraines could be unbalanced forces in your mouth that affect the muscles around your jaw and head.
