Migraines impact as much as 10-percent of the population. While most patients can find relief through a professional pain management treatment and therapy, a new high-tech gadget may offer a hopeful alternative to preventing migraines in the first place.
The device is called Cefaly — it is an electronic headband that sits over the ears and across the forehead, just above the eyes. Through the headband, a self-adhesive electrode sends an electric current to the skin and the tissue just beneath it to stimulate the trigeminal nerve — the nerve associated with migraines.
The Food and Drug Administration approved the device in March 2014 to be used by prescription only, and for no more than 20-minutes a day. It’s already available in Canada, where it costs $300.
A clinical trial of Cefaly in Belgium showed that of the the 67 participants who suffered migraines at least twice a month had “significantly fewer” days dealing with migraines after using Cefaly, compared to those who used the placebo device.
Potential side effects from other clinical studies show sleepiness during treatment and headaches afterward.
