Get Moving! Why Exercise May Be the Best Way to Prevent Migraines

Promising new research shows that professional treatment aside, exercise may be the next best alternative to prevent migraines.

Here at Pasadena Pain Management we use the TruDenta pain management system – which includes hands-on therapy and advanced dental technology – to alleviate migraine symptoms and attacks.  Exercise has also been recommended as treatment, despite lack of scientific evidence. But now, thanks to Swedish researchers, there is proof that exercise works as a preventive treatment for migraines.

Study Shows Exercise Can Prevent Migraines

Their migraine study involved 91 migraine patients, a third of whom were asked to exercise for 40 minutes three times a week. Another third did relaxation exercises, and the final third were given prescription medications. The study lasted for a total of three months, during which the patients’ migraine status, quality of life, aerobic capacity and level of physical activity were evaluated.

Interestingly enough, the results of the study showed that the number of migraines fell in all three groups. There was no difference in the preventative effect between the three treatments – thus, scientists concluded that exercise is, in fact, effective preventive measure.

Exercise a Good Alternative to Drug and Relaxation Treatment

“Our conclusion is that exercise can act as an alternative to relaxations and drugs when it comes to preventing migraines, and is particularly appropriate for patients who are unwilling or unable to take preventative medicines,” says Emma Varkey, a doctoral student who carried out the study.

Please note that people respond to migraine treatments differently. Exercise may not work for all migraine sufferers – that is why it’s important to seek a consult and treatment with a skilled migraine management professional.

Finding a Migraine Treatment That Works For YOU

There are many forms of treatment for migraines. We use dental technology and sports medicine techniques to determine the cause of a migraine, and prevent future attacks. In some cases, some patients report relief after their first visit!
