Just as California ushers in a new law making recreational marijuana legal in the state, a new study shows that cannabis is the preferred pain reliever for people who suffer from chronic pain conditions, including headaches and migraines.
The study analyzed what patients prefer when it comes to managing pain — opioids or medical marijuana?
Less Pain, Less Side Effects
The resounding choice was marijuana. Patients reported that cannabis not only reduced their pain symptoms, it also had less unwanted side effects compared to prescription pills.
Out of the 2,810 participants who were currently using cannabis, only 828 had said they used opioids in the last 6 months to manage their pain.
- 97% of the sample ‘strongly agreed/agreed’ that they are able to decrease the amount of opioids they consume when they also use cannabis.
- 81% ‘strongly agreed/agreed’ that taking cannabis by itself was more effective at treating their condition than taking cannabis with opioids
A Pain Management Alternative
Basically – if given the choice, many of the participants preferred to use cannabis than opioids.
Although marijuana is far from a perfect solution, there has been no recorded overdoses from marijuana – and this study has shown that the patients themselves rate the drug highly for pain management.
The research has been published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research.
