Bruxism or unconscious grinding of your teeth is a fairly common problem — especially in women.
If you often wake up with headaches, suffer from pain in your neck or have sore teeth, then you could be grinding your teeth in your sleep.
Don’t worry – roughly 10 million other Americans have the same problem — and it’s most likely caused by TMJ disorders.
Here’s what you can do.
1. Reduce stress
That’s one of the most common causes of teeth clenching, which can lead to TMJ problems. By reducing stress in your life, you could prevent a lot of the migraines, pain and discomfort related to your TMJ disorder.
2. Correct misaligned teeth
Misaligned teeth can result in bruxism, which can worsen your TMJ problems.
Malocclusion can be caused by a number of things both in and out of your control. You could have inherited overcrowded or unevenly spaced teeth, or an abnormal bite pattern.
You could have experienced a change in your mouth that could dramatically effect on the alignment of your teeth.
While treatment for malocclusion is minor, it’s necessary. We can repair misaligned teeth by leveling out the teeth, reshaping them, and/or bonding them.
3. Avoid caffeine in the evening
Stimulants in the evening can compromise the quality of your sleep, which would make you much more likely to clench your teeth when you turn in for the night. Alcohol can also have adverse effects on the quality of your sleep so steer clear of that as well.
