A TMJ disorder, which is an condition in the temporomandibular joints (the joints that hinge the jaw), is often caused by mechanical stress to the jaw and the surrounding muscles. Unfortunately, TMJ disorders can cause severe discomfort in the joints around the jaw.
If you are experiencing this type of pain, you’ll need to be seen and diagnosed by a TMJ specialist, like me. In the meantime, here are some quick ways you can temporarily relieve TMJ discomfort while you’re waiting for treatment.
Use a heating pad. All you need to do is place the pad (or a warm compress if you don’t have a heating pad) outside the painful area for 15-20 minutes at a time. Warming the area can relax the tensed muscles and relieve the pain you are feeling.
Ice the area. Place the ice pack (or cold compress, like a bag of frozen peas, if you don’t have an ice pack) outside the irritated area for 15-20 minutes at a time. This can help reduce inflammation in the joint and eliminate the discomfort.
3. Jaw Exercises
Here is a very simple exercise that can help relax the jaw. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth so it rests behind your front teeth. Then slowly allow your jaw to drop open.
Repeat several times.

4. Soft Foods
Switch to a soft-foods diet. This is encouraged when you have pain because chewing tough foods can cause more distress on the joints. So, take it easy on your jaw by only eating soft foods, like mashed potatoes, yogurt, cottage cheese, and ice cream.
